A breath of fresh air! Maya Hatch (b. 1985) has been singing practically all her life. When she spent four years in Japan, her mother's homeland, she worked as a studio vocalist at NHK (Japan's public TV station) at a tender age of 12! Back in Seattle, she caught the jazz bug from great singer and educator Greta Matassa. She went on to study music and liberal arts at The New School in New York, receiving instructions from Jane Ira Bloom, Chico Hamilton and Junior Mance. She recorded this debut CD for Spice of Life a month after her graduation.

Hatch's sunny personality and charming voice captivates from the beginning with the exuberant opener "This Can't Be Love." She knows how to swing! She is also surrounded by the top quality jazz talents of her generation--Gerald Clayton on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Quincy Davis on drums. They may be young, but their technique is very sure, and musically they are mature beyond their years. (Gerald Clayton is the famous son of bassist/arranger/educator John Clayton, and is already nominated for the GRAMMY Award's best solo performance for his 2009 album "Two-Shade" and Ben Williams just won the 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition!)

With this lovely debut CD, Maya Hatch has shown that she has a lot of potential. We certainly hope to hear from her soon!
